Thanks to the tireless efforts of activists working for feminism and against racism, there is a growing awareness in Germany of structural injustices that are also reflected in language. More and more authors, translators and publishers are interested in sensitive practices. What this might look like will remain a matter of negotiation. Writer and translator Marion Kraft and translator Eva Bonné provide impulses for this in a conversation about their work.
The conversation will focus on Marion Kraft’s essays about inspiring encounters with Audre Lorde and on works by Abdulrazak Gurnah, Agatha Christie, Tara M. Stringfellows, and bell hooks which Kraft and Bonné have translated. Drawing on their many years of work experience, the two discuss the necessary prerequisites for dealing sensitively with certain texts or topics, the processes behind linguistic and aesthetic choices, dealing with representations of discrimination, and sensitivity readings. By sharing their perspectives they point to many possibilities for writing and translating with sensitivity.
Marion Kraft is a Germanist and Americanist with a doctorate in literature, and a writer, editor and translator. One focus of her work is Black feminist theory and literature. As a translator, she translated works by Audre Lorde, Tara M. Stringfellows and Amanda Gorman. She lives in Berlin. www.marion-kraft.de
Eva Bonné studied American and Portuguese literature in Hamburg, Lisbon and Berkeley. Since then, she has translated literature from English, including works by Rachel Cusk, Anne Enright, Michael Cunningham, and Abdulrazak Gurnah. She lives in Berlin.
